Types of Addiction

Regardless of age, race, or circumstance, drug and alcohol use has become increasingly embedded within the fabric of modern life. It’s more important than ever to familiarize yourself with commonly abused drugs so that you can take steps to protect yourself and seek necessary treatment.

Alcohol
Addiction

An alcohol addiction is not always taken as seriously as an addiction to other substances. Maybe that is because alcohol use is so common and legal. Perhaps the fact that an addiction to alcohol has its own name, alcoholism, shows that it is seen differently from other addictions.

If alcohol is affecting your life, it’s important to realize that an addiction is not simple to quit. Over time, it changes your brain and your behaviors. It takes time—and often professional support—to quit safely and effectively and to stay in recovery.

Cocaine
Addiction

Cocaine is a stimulant drug made by processing leaves from the coca plant. The drug comes in the form of a powder, as well as a crystal-like substance known as “crack,” “rock” or freebase cocaine. Like all stimulants, cocaine speeds up the typical rate of activity inside the brain and spinal cord. In addition, it has the ability to trigger addiction by making lasting changes in normal brain function.

Almost two million people in America use cocaine. This figure includes more than 400,000 consumers of crack. Are you a cocaine user? Do you think you have developed an addiction to the drug? If so, you’re not alone.

Heroin
Addiction
Heroin use may have become less common in the late ‘70s, but it has come back in full force. You might be one of the many people who started by taking opioids and at some point switched to heroin. This is a common pattern, as people form an addiction to prescribed opioid painkillers then loose access to the medication or need a stronger dose. They move to heroin addiction, which has often become easier and cheaper to obtain than prescription opioids. Does this story sound like yours? Whether or not this was your path, you or your loved one may now have an addiction to heroin. This is a difficult addiction to have, yet it’s possible to overcome it and live free from dependency. Treatment can make it easier to go through heroin withdrawal and give you tools and support to live a life without heroin.
Benzodiazepine
Addiction
As part of the prescription sedative class of drugs, benzodiazepines are used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including anxiety, panic disorder, seizures, and insomnia. Sometimes referred to as “benzos,” benzodiazepines are known for being highly addictive and causing particularly dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Commonly abused drugs in this class include Xanax, Ativan, Valium, Klonopin, and Librium. Current research estimates that 2.1 percent of the population misuses benzodiazepines. These medications are particularly dangerous when combined with prescription opioids. More than 30 percent of opioid-related overdoses also involved benzodiazepines.
Adderall & Ritalin
Addiction
By altering chemicals in the brain, Adderall helps people gain mental focus, better behavioral control and increased attention levels. While Adderall helps certain people, it does have the risk of causing harm—especially for those who don’t have ADHD or narcolepsy. It’s possible to misuse Adderall, as well as to abuse and become addicted to it. If this has happened to you, you might have noticed that your quality of life has been on a decline because of the drug use. A treatment program can help you figure out whether you have a problem with Adderall and find ways to overcome it for a better life.
