Five years ago I was a complete and utter mess, unable to hold down a job, be present as a husband and father to my wife and son, and deep into a full-blown relapse with the drug that nearly did me in three decades earlier — cocaine. I was irresponsibly and unfairly draining our bank accounts with no care in the world to support my habit again, even using the insurance money from my wife’s car accident and leaving us with next to nothing by the time my bad choices landed me in the ER and ICU at the West Palm Beach VA Hospital facing liver failure and exhibiting unusually high cardiac enzymes.

Thanks to the amazing and astute doctors at the VA I avoided going on dialysis or worse, and after getting all of the drugs (including high amounts of lithium) flushed out of my system, I was given the option of IOP or in-patient treatment for my addiction, with the IOP option removed by my wife and son if I ever wanted to return to my house. So on April 23rd, 2019, after being discharged from the VA Hospital, I was driven by the legendary Clyde in a van to Transformations to begin my 30-day in-patient treatment program — a 30-day stint that would forever change my life for the better and provide me with the tools to embrace my recovery and turn my life around.Andy 2

Here we are, with my 5-year Anniversary Date approaching on March 22nd, and I continue to marvel at the blessings that keep coming my way in this clean and sober life of mine. Our family unit has never been closer, with our son thriving as a college sophomore at the University of Florida academically, athletically, and socially on the cusp of turning 20; my wife completing a life-changing journey abroad earlier this year and myself having just completed my most successful year in sales at what was supposed to be a temporary job four years ago, buying a brand new car for the first time in 10 years and being given the cleanest bill of health by my primary doctor in decades. We also weathered every kind of imaginable storm this past year, from our dog going completely blind to my son and I surviving a harrowing car accident, with our love and faith fully intact.Andy 1

Living just for today, one of the core values taught to me at Transformations and in NA, has helped keep me grounded and appreciative of all of these blessings and I will remain inspired to stay on this new path!
