Alcohol is the drug of choice for people with mental health condition including stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, alcohol is a substance that becomes dangerous if used for “self-medication.” It is not always easy to detect an alcoholic and alcohol is easily available everywhere and has no social stigma attached to it. There are 5 truths that an alcoholic addict becomes blind to. One, alcohol makes you dependent. Drinkers do not want to admit they are addicted because they do not want to feel shamed or vulnerable so they choose to ignore this truth. Two, they do not see depression after a hang-over as dangerous. However, these are times when alcoholics contemplate suicide, become despondent and irritable. Three, alcohol self-medication becomes so easy and is able to help an alcoholic hide the truth since they can drink at night or weekends – or even during meetings and office events. Four, alcohol addicts do not see how alcohol is destroying their future. Many think of it as “social drinking” and the pressure to drink is strong and hard to resist. Finally, they fail to see that they need help. Many times, alcoholics need to be challenged to make any effort to stop drinking. Their family and friends should step in and help them see the real picture because a person with mental health issues will simply want to escape to a “safe and happy place” rather than deal with the truth.
