Happy February, Alumni! I know a lot of people associate February with love, but I also know that not everyone is in a romantic relationship. That’s the beauty of film, whether you’re head over heels for your significant other or you’re riding solo, movies can be enjoyed by all. This month, I chose Promising Young Woman. Starring Carey Mulligan and Bo Burnham, this dark comedy thriller is focused on Cassie Thomas (Mulligan) taking vengeance for something that ultimately led to her best friend’s death in college. Cassie lives with her parents, works at a coffee shop by day, and prowls the bars and clubs at night waiting for the right man to try and take advantage of her when she is faking her intoxication.

At times I believe Cassie is taking things too far, but as I continue to watch I understand that her intentions are good, that she is only trying to scare men into changing their ways and putting a halt to taking advantage of women. Just when I think Cassie is easing up on her vengeful actions, the biggest and most frustrating plot twist occurs, and at this moment I am hooked in. If I keep writing, I will give too much away, so I am encouraging you all to grab your lover, a friend, or even just a bucket of popcorn and a box of Peanut M&M’s – Promising Young Woman is available to stream on Amazon Prime, Youtube, Vudu, and more.
